“Ask not what your Employer can do for you...”
The Interview Doctor suggests we spare a thought for the Employers and reveals why landing your next job might be easier than you think.
By this time of year it’s a sad fact that many well intentioned resolutions will be distant memories. But, if among the new gym memberships and nicotine patches, a new job in 2007 featured on your list of resolutions, chances are that you are still looking.
According to job search mega-site Monster.co.uk, the average job search can last for anything from 2 to 10 months. If you’ve tried, you will know that searching for a job is a job in itself. Sadly, unless you actually find one, it’s very stressful and very poorly paid.
As you read this article, there are thousands of jobs vacancies in Leicestershire and thousands of people thinking of moving jobs or actively seeking a new position. My question is this, “How much shorter would our job search be if we thought a little more about the employers?”
Before you protest and tell me they are the ones with the jobs to offer, let’s just take a moment to think about it. Yes, they have the position to fill and the power to hire, but the reality is they are short of staff, paying to advertise the vacancy, and diverting their time to process and coordinate applications and interviews. With their interviews completed they have no guarantee of finding a suitable candidate.
So I’ll let you in on a secret. Employers are desperately seeking talented candidates and the job is yours in a heartbeat if you can demonstrate you can solve their problem.
Back in 1961, the late US President John F. Kennedy famously said “Ask not what your country can do for you – ask what you can do for your country”. Those who ask what they can do for their employer are the first to be hired, first to be promoted and the highest paid. Quite a contrast, wouldn’t you agree, to the employee who stopped looking for work the day he got a job?
